Accelerating Vietnam's clean energy transition: Highlights from the ACEC/CEBA Clean Energy Partner Dialogue Workshop
The Asia Clean Energy Coalition and the Clean Energy Buyers Institute co-hosted the Vietnam Clean Energy Partner’s Dialogue Workshop in Hanoi, Vietnam, on February 29, 2024. This workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including corporate energy customers, developers, investors, and partner organizations, all convened with a shared goal: to accelerate the journey towards sustainable and renewable energy procurement within Vietnam.
Central to the workshop's discussions were the exploration of current and promising procurement options, such as rooftop solar and the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA). The focus on the DPPA was especially significant, positioning it at the forefront of policy conversations. Additionally, the upcoming Law on Prices, slated to come into effect on July 1, 2024, was acknowledged as crucial for the potential rollout of DPPA in late 2024 or early 2025.
The discussions underscored the pressing need for a comprehensive approach to clean energy policy and procurement in Vietnam. Strategic priorities were identified, including the development of a clear implementation plan for the Power Development Plan 8, ensuring policy clarity for rooftop solar, and creating a credible pathway for suppliers to engage in renewable energy procurement. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagements and data collection on demand and potential investment, underscoring the role of education and training in empowering the Vietnamese supply chain.
A significant outcome of the workshop was the collaborative approach to overcoming challenges and identifying solutions for accelerating clean energy procurement in the country. By fostering an environment of collaboration and strategic policy engagement, the workshop underscored the imperative for collective action in driving the transition towards a sustainable energy landscape in Vietnam.
Reflecting on the success of the Vietnam Clean Energy Partner Dialogue Workshop, it's clear that collaboration, strategic policy engagement, and collective action are key to advancing clean energy objectives. The workshop not only laid the groundwork for creating a favorable policy environment for corporate RE procurement but also set the stage for a collaborative journey towards achieving clean energy goals and economic development in harmony with the environment.
